LEDBURY concluded their stunning league season last month with one final bonus-point victory away at Rugby St Andrews.

Having been the only team to beat Ledbury this season, in the opening game of the 2021/22 campaign, the hosts were keen to make it a double but the visitors would not be denied revenge.

The afternoon started with one of the most prolific try-scoring forwards around dotting down as Ed Bennion crossed for umpteenth time this season early on.

RSA responded with a penalty, 3-7, but Ledbury increased their lead after a long range driving maul that saw the evergreen Jock Welch pirouette over for a try, again the extras from Rayfield, 3-14.

Chaos ensued shortly afterwards as a late tackle from Harry Harris sparked a fracas in which RSA captain was shown a red card and Lewis Ballinger a yellow. Harris was also sent to the bin for the incident.

Despite their numerical advantage for the ten minute period, RSA could not capitalise and early in the second-half Ledbury extended their lead through Ben Mason’s try and a Dan Smith conversion to make it 3-21.

When least expected, RSA did manage to get out of their half and put the ball through the hands and release their full back for an excellent try which was duly converted, 10-21.

Eager to gain the try bonus point and reach a stratospheric 100 point total for the season, the last five minutes were all Ledbury.

A superbly executed driving maul saw Arron Almond flopping over to score, before a Bennion rampaging run ended with Rayfield scoring between the sticks. With time now called Rayfield coolly iced his cake with the extras, last kick of the game, to make it 10-35.
