Ledbury Town staged an impressive second-half comeback in mid-week as they maintained their 100% start to the league season.

But their unbeaten start was under threat at the break as visitors Welland held a surprise 1-0 lead in front of an expectant crowd at New Street.

Manager Ian Merrick was less than pleased at full-time but 20 blistering second half minutes and goals from Zac Blood, Ryan Pugh, Josh Burns, and Joel Skyers turned the game around to hand Town a 4-1 win.

Despite the result, manager Merrick refused to accept what he described as a "very, very poor" first-half display from the league leaders.

"We could have subbed elven players at half-time because it was a real sub-par performance," said Merrick.

"First-half we were very, very poor. Given the standards we have set so far this season, that display was disappointing to say the least.

"We gave the ball away, were sloppy and Welland deserved to be leading at half-time.

"In the second-half, we were a little bit better but in all honesty I am not pleased with the performance overall.

"But we dug in, showed some character and got the all important result."

But a sixth win from six means Ledbury open up a three point advantage over Kington Town and Hereford Pegasus Reserves, but both have a game in hand after perfect starts themselves.

Merrick is at least happy with what the table says for now.

"Our aim is to win this league and get promotion," he added.

"This is what we as a coaching group and the chairman want and it is what we are working hard for.

"But leagues are not won in September. It's a start, we have a winning habit which is good and it's nice to see Ledbury sitting top of the league."
