IAN Merrick admits his side will have to 'play well to get a positive result' against high-flying New Dales Vale in the ZZOOMM Herefordshire Premier Division.

Ledbury FC have finally been able to get the ball rolling on the back-end of their 2024/25 campaign after a period of extended absence, due to the effects of the weather.

The side tasted defeat against Hereford Pegasus in their first game of 2025 but put it right with an impressive performance against Hereford Ro-Stars - winning the bout 3-2.

"I think we played very well," said Merrick. "3-2 flattered them.

The last 25 minutes we were really good in attack and we created seven or eight goalscoring chances. We should have put half of them away, I think six or seven [goals scored] would have been a more fair reflection of our performance."

Next awaits a tough challenge for Merrick's side - New Dales Vale.

New Dales currently sit second in the league - joint on points with first-placed Alcester Town. They are also one of only four sides in the division who have applied for promotion to step six.

"We drew with them twice last season and they were both very close games," said Merrick. "Not a lot between the sides. They’re a physical, powerful team. They battle hard and I’d say credit to them – they never know when they’re beat, they do battle hard.

"It will be a tough game. They usually bring a few supporters as well so they can be quite vocal. We haven’t had a home game since the middle of November so hopefully a Friday night fixture at New Street usually attracts a decent crowd. I think it will be a good occasion.

"We are going to have to play well to get a positive result. If you look at where they are in the table they are at it, so we’re going to have to play well to get a good result."

The match will undoubtedly provide a stern challenge for Ledbury, but Merrick is looking forward to seeing his side play on home soil for the first time in 2025.

"It is no secret that we are looking to move and get a brand new all-weather pitch but it is a magical place," said Merrick.

"Some of my best memories in football – games when I was playing and managing – have happened there. For a step seven side we get some unbelievable crowds and some unbelievable support."

Ledbury will go into the match with a strong side, with the return of a number of first-team players to the side.

The game kicks off this Friday (February 7).
