LEDBURY Cricket Club's returned to winning ways on the weekend with a thoroughly convincing eight-wicket win against Fownhope Strollers.

Captain Josh Evans won the toss and elected to bowl first on a track that looked like it would offer plenty for batters and bowlers alike.

The new opening bowling pair of Jack Trattel and Brian Weaver took full advantage of the conditions and passed the bat on many occasions, with Weaver’s left arm bowling being rewarded with two wickets.

Trattell’s figures were particularly impressive with nine overs bowled, four of which were maidens, with two wickets also taken and only 17 runs being scored.

Duncan Bell returned to the action this week, and his fast bowling took two wickets. Vicky Evans also chipped in with a wicket, which was one of the strangest ways for a batsman to get out. The Fownhope batsman edged the ball behind and wicket keeper Nick Gibbons caught it with the use of his helmet.

Thanks must go to groundsman Steve Evans for his quick use of Google to ensure that the wicket did indeed stand.

Once again though it was pace bowler David Nash who took the lion share of the wickets, with three more to add to his name this week.

Thanks to some persistent middle order batting from Fownhope, and a healthy injection of extras from Ledbury’s bowling this week, their total creeped up to 206 runs before they were eventually bowled out in the final over.

In reply, the Ledbury opening batsmen got off to a flyer.

Captain Evans, and Nick Gibbons flew out of the blocks and punished the Fownhope bowlers. The pair soon bagged another superb partnership of 111 between them.

Gibbons, back to his old self this week, scored a classy looking 42 runs before edging one behind to slip.

Number three batsmen Tom Bowring, joined Evans who made it to another half century, before being caught on 51.

Jack Trattell and Bowring (24 not out) then managed to knock the remaining 86 runs off between them, with Trattell looking to play his shots this week and being rewarded with a half century of 57 not out.

This was a welcome return to winning ways for Ledbury's first team, especially after the narrow loss the week before, and it keeps them nicely tucked into a mid-table position.

They will look to continue the good form against fellow mid-table perches Malvern seconds this weekend, in a bid to push back up into the top spots.

Ledbury's second team meanwhile will be looking to bounce back strongly following a tough day at Almerley last weekend, and they will be hosting West Malvern at Orlham Lane.
