Ledbury FC were left to rue a dismal first half as Clee Hill United, sitting 13th out of 14 in the table, snatched an unlikely point at New Street, denying the hosts a win they would have expected to claim with something to spare.
With champions-elect Bromyard having already wrapped up the title, every dropped point now costs Ledbury in the race to finish the season with credibility.
It was Ian Merrick's first game back in the dugout since being sent off during November's 2-1 defeat to AFC Kempsey, a dismissal that had kept him away from the touchline ever since. The opening 45 minutes raised uncomfortable questions about defensive frailty and a lack of cohesion that has clearly not been resolved in his absence.
Clee Hill were sharp, well-organised and relentless in their pressing, with Bowen a constant menace. Euan Morgan clipped a fine ball into his path early on and the striker swivelled smartly, only to see his volley rebound off the crossbar.
On 13 minutes, Joel Grieve brought Bowen down inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot. The striker dispatched the penalty with cool authority, finding the left side of the net to give the visitors a lead their play had fully merited.
Ledbury barely managed to string passes together against Clee Hill's high press, and the second goal arrived with an air of inevitability. Bowen, who appeared to be in an offside position, ghosted in between the Ledbury centre-halves and fired. It looked a routine save for Luke Johnson, but the ball squirmed through the goalkeeper's grasp and over the line.
Bowen might have made it three before the break, flashing a chance narrowly wide after being released by a quick throw from Luke Whitbread. At the other end, Morgan went close with a back-post header before Whitbread's free-kick was smartly turned behind by Johnson.
The transformation after the break was striking. Ledbury pressed with renewed intensity, though fortune continued to conspire against them, with Ryan Dobbins striking the post and then the crossbar in the space of five minutes.
The breakthrough eventually came. Dobbins was again the catalyst, poking the ball through for Gayner, who clipped a finish off the inside of the left post.
Clee Hill, assured in the first half, began to buckle. A dangerous ball from Ben Febery caused havoc in the visiting defence and fell to Skidmore, who swept it into the bottom left corner with conviction.
Ledbury pushed for a winner. Dobbins headed over at the back post from close range before Jordan produced the save of the match to deny Micula from 10-yards.
