Ledbury RFC lit up the season finale with a commanding victory over Bromyard RFC at home, writes Stephen Smith.
In a thrilling encounter at Ross Road, Ledbury celebrated the end of the 2025/26 season with a resounding 36-7 win against local rivals Bromyard RFC in the North Midlands Counties 1 Midland West (South) League.
Ledbury’s first XV asserted control right from the opening whistle with a swift scrum inside the Bromyard 22. They capitalised on early visiting errors, and full-back George Wallin found the try line almost immediately, followed by a successful conversion from Jack Hughes that put the home team in front, 7-0.
Ledbury was relentless in their pursuit of points. A penalty awarded after a late hit on scrum-half Iolo Bubb set the stage for the second try, with the forwards driving over from a lineout, again converted by Hughes to extend the lead to 14-0.
Ledbury dominated in both set pieces and dynamic play, with Wallin once more evading Bromyard’s defence to secure his second try, making the score 19-0.
The home side secured a bonus point just before halftime when Bubb made a brilliant break, with Saxelby powering through to score. Ledbury walked into the break with a commanding 24-0 lead.
The visitors came out determined in the second half, applying early pressure that eventually paid off with their first score of the match, closing the gap to 24-7.
However, Ledbury swiftly extinguished any notions of a comeback. Following a scrappy passage of play, Hughes exploited a gap in the Bromyard defence to score under the posts while converting his own try to restore a healthy lead at 31-7.
Soon after, Ledbury’s forwards again tested their opponents. Another penalty awarded to Ledbury led to an attacking lineout, where Bubb sent Charlie Pallett over for the final try of the match, bringing the score to 36-7.
Tempers briefly flared late on after an off-the-ball incident involving Tom Manning, leading to an even-handed decision from the referee to send both players to the sin bin.
As the final whistle blew, Ledbury celebrated an impressive performance that marked a positive end to their season, offering hope for a strong promotion challenge in the next campaign.
Meanwhile, the club’s Lions team capped off the day with a dominant 68-17 victory against Ross-on-Wye.
