Ledbury CC’s impressive winning run came to an end at the weekend after a hard-fought defeat to Worcester Amigos in an entertaining and closely contested match, writes Tom Bowring.

Batting first on a pitch that offered plenty of assistance to the bowlers, Ledbury began brightly. Josh Evans looked in good touch early on, striking several confident shots to get the innings moving. However, the early momentum was checked when Tom Hill was dismissed by a sharp delivery, and Evans soon followed after being bowled. The situation worsened when Nick Gibbons was caught behind, leaving Ledbury under pressure at 59-3.

A vital recovery was led by Tom Bowring and captain Rhys Gunter, who combined for a composed and disciplined 50-run partnership. Their stand steadied the innings and allowed Ledbury to rebuild. Bowring was eventually caught at mid-wicket, but Gunter remained at the crease and continued to play with authority.

Supported well by David Nash, Gunter gradually increased the scoring rate despite the challenging conditions, where boundaries were difficult to come by. The pair pushed the total beyond 180, turning the tide back in Ledbury’s favour. Gunter’s excellent unbeaten 78 proved to be the backbone of the innings, guiding Ledbury to a competitive 212-6.

In reply, Ledbury made the perfect start with the ball. Vicky Evans and Tom Hill struck early blows, each removing an Amigos opener to put the visitors under immediate pressure. However, Worcester’s middle order responded strongly, counter-attacking with positive intent and finding the boundary more regularly as the innings progressed.

Hill continued to make his mark in the field, taking two particularly impressive catches to keep Ledbury in the contest. Further contributions came from David Nash and Josh Evans, who each picked up a wicket, while Fraser Renfrew Clarke added another with a lively spell of bowling.

As the match entered its closing stages, Will Griffiths provided a late spark for Ledbury, bravely stepping in to take two quick wickets that briefly shifted momentum and raised hopes of a comeback.

The standout performer with the ball was Chaz Barber, who produced an outstanding spell of 1-10 from his nine overs, including three maidens, maintaining relentless pressure on the Amigos batting line-up.

Despite a determined all-round effort, Ledbury were unable to claim the final wickets required, with Worcester Amigos holding their nerve to reach the target in the 42nd over.

Although the defeat brings their winning streak to a halt, Ledbury can take heart from a resilient performance in what proved to be a highly competitive and closely fought encounter.
