Plans are being developed to build a new retirement home in Ledbury town centre.

McCarthy Stone, which runs dozens of retirement homes around the country, wants to develop land off The Homend and will start consulting on its plans soon.

The land earmarked for development is described as being north of Tesco, opposite Knapp Lane.

McCarthy Stone says it has written to close neighbours of the site and is in the process of speaking to town and county councillors about its initial plans.

In the coming weeks, the developer will also be launching a virtual consultation for the wider community to view and comment on the scheme.

Kate Fisher, McCarthy Stone’s midlands divisional managing director, said: “We are keen to develop a scheme that positively contributes to the local community through a high-quality, attractive design.

“We will therefore be involving the local community throughout the planning application process as we believe it is vital for local people to be given the opportunity to offer their feedback.”

A spokesperson said the submission of a planning application could still be some months away, but that the company was keen to engage with residents beforehand as part of a non-statutory consultation.

Right now, the project is still at a very early stage - there are no set plans for the number of units that could be built and no artists’ impressions as to what the development may look like.

McCarthy Stone believes there is a local need for this type of accommodation in the Ledbury area.

“Retirement apartments would allow occupants looking to ease the burden of maintaining a large property, the opportunity to downsize, releasing larger family homes onto the market,” it said.

Details of the upcoming virtual public exhibition will be publicised in the coming weeks but anyone who would like more information can call the project’s freephone information line on 0800 298 7040 or email feedback@mccarthystoneconsultation.co.uk.

Among McCarthy Stone's previous developments is a retirement home in Hereford opened in 2019.
