LEDBURY CC began there 2025 season with a disappointing home loss, against a strong Barnard’s Green third XI.

With the previous weekend’s game rained off, it was important that Ledbury got their season off to a good start with a win, but unfortunately the Barnard’s Green bowling attack proved to be too strong for Ledbury’s batsmen.

Captain Josh Evans lost the toss, and Ledbury were asked to bat first.

The newly formed opening partnership of Evans, and wicket keeper Nick Gibbons is proving to be working well, with the two batsmen putting on a solid 50 runs between them after 10 overs.

Evans was then bowled by a very good delivery by the Barnard’s Green opening off spinner. Number three batsmen Tom Bowring joined the action before Gibbons was then stumped leaving the score at a hopeful 65-2.

However, that optimism was soon dashed as Ledbury lost their remaining 8 wickets very cheaply and were all out for just 128.

Tom Bowring remained not out for 30 runs as Ledbury’s middle order collapsed against an accurate and attacking Barnard’s Green bowling and fielding performance.

In reply, Ledbury’s bowlers performed admirably in trying to take wickets whilst defending a small total. Jack Trattell bowled excellently for nine overs with great skill and determination.

He picked up a key wicket early on to send a message that Ledbury would fight all the way. Meanwhile Dave Nash, returning to first team cricket, bowled fast and attacked the top order Barnard’s Green batsmen and also picked up a wicket of one of the openers.

Jamie Turner’s leg spin also managed to pick up a wicket to keep the game interesting. But the pick of the bowlers was young Chaz Barber. Following on from his superb 2024 season, he picked up three more wickets and again proved himself to be a real asset in Ledbury’s bowling attack.

This weekend Ledbury first XI host the Kempsey Amigos at Orlham Lane. Whilst Ledbury second XI’s league season also gets underway in their new league, with an away trip to Kington.

Ledbury CC is always welcoming of new players and would encourage anyone interested in playing cricket this summer to reach out via Ledbury Cricket Clubs’ social media or come and visit the club on a weekend. Senior training continues every Wednesday evening.
