AN Olympic volunteer is fighting it out among the world’s biggest pop stars to claim the top spot in the music singles chart.

Michelle Gabriel, of Belmont, Hereford, was a Gamesmaker at London 2012 and later became part of the choir that performed at the Olympic Park.

Michelle, along with the rest of the choir, has now teamed up with singer songwriter Alistair Griffin to record a new song which they hope will be number one this weekend.

The song, I Wish For You the World, received its first play on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show earlier this month and last weekend featured as part of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year coverage.

“I was fortunate to be involved in the Olympics over the summer as a Gamesmaker,” said Michelle.

“And if that wasn’t fab enough I have since joined the Gamesmaker choir.

“A few months ago we were approached by Alistair about singing with him on a track he had written and since then we have been on a bit of a rollercoaster.”

The song was released on Sunday and is up against Stronger Together by the Military Wives, Impossible by X Factor winner James Arthur, He Ain’t Heavy by The Justice Collective and a Facebook campaign to get The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s Christmas classic Fairytale of New York to the top spot.

Money raised from sales of I Wish For You the World will be donated to the British Olympic Foundation and the British Paralympic Association.
