TOWN councillors are concerned about the state of historic cobbled areas in the town centre.

They consider that specialist repair work needs to be in Church Lane, the most famous calendar shot in Ledbury, near the war memorial and in Tilley’s Alley, where most of the ancient cobbles are now missing.

Coun Tony Bradford is particularly keen that Tilley’s Alley should be restored to its former glory.

But others are more worried about Church Lane, a popular spot for tourists and visitors to Ledbury.

Coun Lily Fiedhouse said: “A member of the public was walking up Church Lane, recently, and she slipped and banged her face, and now she won’t walk up there again.”

It isn’t known whether or not loose or missing cobbles were to blame for the accident, but Coun Keith Francis warned against the idea any repairs would do.

He said: “If we report it as a hazard, the gaps will be filled in, but the quality will be terrible using just concrete. It’s a mish-mash up there.”

Some concrete infill has already taken place in recent years, at the top of Church Lane, close to the old magistrates court.

Herefordshire Council contractor Amey has told the town council the repairs require specialist work, for which there is no money in the budget at present. Coun Martin Eager said: “It’s a bit worrying – whether the work will be done or not.”
