A KINGTON resident has won the Turner Prize.

Ian Wood-Johnson picked up the prestigious honour last week at Arrow Mills Garden Centre after his raised beds and container planting were awarded the top prize for Kington In Bloom.

The Turner Prize, which consists of a bag of gardening goodies, was presented to new entrant Mr Wood-Johnson by Simon and Sara Turner from the Kington garden centre.

Judges praised the gardens use of raised beds as a backdrop for the kaleidoscope of colours used in his planting.

This year’s business categories were both won by the Burton Hotel, with the judges enjoying the hotel’s “clever use of grasses”.

Kington in Bloom is run each year by the town council, and is open to any household or business.

It aims to promote gardening and encourage people to grow as many flowers as possible.

The winners in each category were; for up to eight containers, Mrs Reynolds, domestic premises: and Arrowfield Veterinary Practice, business premises.

For nine or more containers; Mr and Mrs Osborne, domestic premises; and The Burton Hotel business premises

And for established gardens; Mr Wood-Johnson, domestic premises, The Burton Hotel business premises.
