KINGTON’S last building society may be set for closure after Dudley Building Society announced this week its plan to withdraw from the area, pulling out of four agencies over the next six months.

All members have been contacted and informed on how to continue using the society’s services, however the three closest agencies – Knighton, Bishops Castle and Llandrindod Wells – are also set to end their relationship with DBS.

A DBS spokesman said: “After careful consideration we have taken the decision to end our relationship with those agencies.

“As a mutual building society, all profit we make is re-invested for the benefit of our members.

“Sometimes we have to make difficult decisions, with the future prosperity of the Society in mind.”

The news comes just 18 months after the liquidation of popular cooperative the Marches Credit Union – which also had a base in the west Herefordshire town – further narrowing the options for those who want to keep their savings somewhere other than the High Street banks.

Chief executive Jeremy Wood informed the Kington agency last month that DBS would be ending their relationship in three months.

In a statement the company has said that any members who require immediate access to their funds can make a free, immediate transfer of any amount over £100 to any UK current account.
