A CONVOY of more than 100 cars travelled from Ross-on-Wye to Hereford in memory of a 24-year-old who died following a crash on the A49 in Much Birch.

Ian Wemyss was driving his white Ford Fiesta at 9.23pm last Friday when he was involved in a crash with a grey Mercedes near the Pilgrim Hotel.

He was taken to hospital in Birmingham with serious injuries, but died on Monday.

Tributes have poured in on Facebook to Mr Wemyss, who lived near Ross-on- Wye in Phocle Green.

And on Monday night a convoy of more than 100 cars went from the KFC car park in Ross to Monmouth to Abergavenny and then to Hereford.

His close friends from Ross- Marky Coleman, Steve Hill, Chris Wadley and Jodie Harris- have paid tribute to Mr Wemyss.

Mr Hill said his great loves were his cars and his mates. He said: “He would do anything for anyone. It wouldn’t matter if you annoyed him – he would still be there.

“If you wanted to talk, he would be there.”

Mr Wadley added: “He is still helping people, as since his death five organs have been donated to five people and saved their lives. He is still fighting for other people.”

Mr Wemyss, who is known as Devvo to his friends, was car-mad and his friends are currently doing up a Peugeot 106, belonging to Mr Wemyss, so they can take it to his funeral in Manchester.

Mr Wemyss grew up in Manchester and would come to Symonds Yat with his family on holiday, as his dad liked fishing in the River Wye.

Around six years ago he moved with his parents to Herefordshire – he also leaves behind an older sister.

Mr Wemyss worked at Mandarin Stone Tiles and Flooring in Monmouth as a forklift operator.

Mr Coleman said: “He had a good sense of humour and a heart of gold.”

Mr Wemyss was a dedicated godfather to Mr Hill’s son, James. So much so that Ian will be added to his name so he is called James George (Ian) Leon Hill.

Mr Hill added: “He was quite a deep person. You could go into any feelings with him whatsoever.”

“He was the softest, kindest, most loyal person I will ever meet.”

Mr Hill, Mr Coleman and Mr Wadley will carry their friend’s coffin at his funeral with Stuart Gamble, Liam Hale, and Pete Hayward.

The date is yet to be set.

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.

Police want speak to anyone who witnessed the crash. Call 101 quoting reference number 742s of Friday 6th November.
