A neighbour told the Mail: “A police van and car suddenly turned up on the driveway.”
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “A man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
“He has been taken into custody for questioning. We will not be commenting further.”
A source close to Mr Hayler told the Mail that he was “assisting police with their enquiries”.
Last Sunday (April 16), Mr Hayler laced up his football boots to take part in a charity football match at Edgar Street, the home of Hereford FC.
Other celebrities that played included singer James Arthur, TV star Dan Osborne and Love Island's Jack Keating and Josh Ritchie.
Former Hereford players Rob Purdie, Joel Edwards and Carlos Moreira also laced up their boots, with money raised going towards the ELY Memorial Fund, a Herefordshire charity that provides financial help for funeral costs when loved ones are killed in road traffic accidents.
