CALLS to dissolve Ledbury Town Council, with a mass resignation of councillors, were resisted robustly at last week's full town council meeting.

The proposal that the council should dissolve itself, and that a full election should be held to elect a new town council, was initially made at a parish meeting which was held on May 31, at the Market Theatre.

The proposal at the parish meeting was made by Cllr Nick Morris who, at last week's full town council meeting, unsuccessfully proposed himself as a candidate for the position of town mayor for this year.

At the parish meeting, Cllr Morris' proposal to dissolve the council won considerable support, with 34 votes in favour and two against.

Issues raised about the town council included perceptions that "communications between the council and the town were poor" and that meetings were not always advertised adequately.

Cllr Morris said the parish meeting had been "an evening of positive discussion".

He said: "It ranged from how the council works, to the need for the council to have a publicly stated vision and objectives that would then form the basis for better communication between council and town."

Proposing a vote on dissolving the town council, at last week's full town council meeting in the Methodist Church, Cllr Andrew Warmington said: "It's a re-election for all members of the council. The council should resign on mass and stand again, if they wish to."

But Cllr Annette Crowe said: "I stood for four years, and that's what I intend to do. I do my best for Ledbury. I think I work hard. I have no intention of standing down."

And Cllr Tony Bradford said: "You can't call for the councillors to leave in a democracy, and I don't want to."

The proposal to dissolve the council was defeated by a show of hands.
