TEENAGE Ledbury star Alex Florence has been denied a title shot by an Amateur Boxing Association rule change.

He stepped up for his first senior bout to comfortably beat Wellington’s Ishan Malik by a unanimous decision in the UBC Championship belt semi-finals.

Florence demonstrated plenty of skill and maturity and looked ready to fight for the belt on February 1.

But the town prospect was denied the chance the day after his win as the ABA decided boxers must be aged 19 to 40 to claim the title, so ruling out the younger competitor.

His coach and father Fred Florence said: “We’re devastated the ABA changed the rules while he was still in competition but I can see why they did.

“Not all 17 and 18 year olds are ready to step up to fight men but all Alex has sparred and trained with are men and he was so up for it and ready.

“We were hoping he would bring a belt back for Ledbury but, never mind, by the time he is 19 he will be stronger, faster and more mature, which will make it much easier for him to pick a title belt up.

“However, we will not be going for that particular belt when he is 19 because he will be going for a bigger one which will be worth more.”

Florence wants more opponents for his son and added they are prepared to travel anywhere.
