WORCESTER League champions Malvern Hills Buzzards lost their 100 per cent record with a 59-54 defeat to Worcester Bears Orillo in the final game of the season.

With a perfect winning streak over seven games, Buzzards had already topped the table but they looked to finish the season in style.

Hyped and ready to win, Buzzards produced an intense first quarter and looked for any opportunity to race ahead with the early lead. But Bears got the upper hand, securing good baskets to give them the edge and get back into the game.

However, Buzzards rode out the storm and led 14-11 at the end of the first period.

The second quarter mirrored the first with both teams capitalising on opportunities and at half-time the score was tied at 26-26.

In the second-half, there was even greater energy from both teams as they continued to go head-to-head with everything to play for.

The game became more physical as both teams went all out to gain an advantage.

As the clock wound down to the final buzzer, Buzzards looked set to get their win with a two-point lead.

But Bears forced a last-minute shot with 0.7 seconds on the clock, which tied the game at 50-50 and forced it into over-time for an additional five minutes of play.

Both teams turned up the pressure for the remaining minutes and gave it everything they had but, despite all efforts, Buzzards could not stop Bears from pulling away with a 59-54 success.

However, Buzzards have enjoyed a tremendous second season.

With new players joining the team this year, the team have boasted greater quality in depth and regular training has helped them go on to top the league table.

Plans are already taking shape for the play-offs and next season.

Buzzards are based at Dyson Perrins Academy, Yates Hay Road.
