SIMON Phillips left all in his wake to lift the Professional’s Cup at The Worcestershire Golf Club.

Playing off a handicap of 12, the Division One player mastered both the blustery conditions and some fearsome pin positions to card an impressive 65 nett.

Phillips was two strokes ahead of Steve Carter (handicap 11) on 67 with Andy McCabe (5) third on 69.

Division One also produced the winner of the Left-Handers’ Cup when Andy Longley took the title with 72.

Scoring was tighter in Division Two with Roger Turner (17) beating Pete Basten (15) on count-back after both finished on 70, while David Turner (17) was close behind on 71.

A good round of 69 saw Ian Bone release himself from the maximum handicap of 28 in taking Division Three ahead of Roy Cale (22) on 71.

John Wright (19) edged out Phil Burton for third place with both on 72.

Windy conditions also prevailed for the club’s midweek medal.

They proved no obstacle to new member and five-handicapper John Pates, who came in a handful of strokes ahead of the field on 68 nett.

He was followed home in Division One by three players on 75 as Richard Bird (14) secured second place ahead of Clint Webbe (9) and Andrew Meredith (8).

Division Two saw Mike Morris (21) ease out Barry Tuck (19) and Les Facer (18) with all three on 74.

In-form golfers Cathy Harris and Pauline Belsham carded an impressive 40 stableford points to take the honours when The Worcestershire ladies played their Ping better-ball competition.

Runners-up with a respectable 36 were Mary Horrobin and Liz Evans ahead of Doreen Hunt and Joyce Duncan on 35.

The nine-hole competition was won by Betty Mitchell with 15 points, from Jenny Bunyan on 14.

In inter-club matches, the ladies’ DICL team of Chris Urry (11), Jackie Marks (14), captain Jill Piner (14), Di Wilde (17) and Pat Rose (19) were successful in beating a strong visiting side from Kidderminster.

In a closely-fought tussle, all but one of the matches went to the 18th with The Worcestershire ladies showing great mettle to come away with a well-deserved 4-1 victory.

A similarly tight contest saw a mixed team from Kidderminster redress the balance with a 6-4 win at the Malvern Wells club.

Successful pairings for the hosts were Jill and Brian Piner, Liz Pool and Peter Hill and Di and Paul Meakin, with halves from Corinne and Nigel Mills and Brenda and Trevor Cox.

Away from home, a ladies’ team, captained by Jane Quick, met steady opposition when they travelled to Tewkesbury for a friendly better-ball match.

Home advantage prevailed and, while enjoying the day, the visitors lost 3-1 on games.
